Ena Lund Ena Lund's work can be found in the USA, Scandinavia and throughout Europe, but it is firmly rooted in the traditions of Cumbria. The subjects of these paintings are the working and sporting beasts from her native fells. Background Born and bred in Cumbria, Ena Lund came back to paint after a career as a CA in continental Europe and obtained a degree in Fine Art at Lancaster University; her work eventually finding focus in the local animal life. Inspiration The depiction of hunting themes has long been a tradition for artists worldwide – starting with the cave paintings of prehistoric man. Classical artists show Diana the Huntress with her hounds. Medieval works of bestiaries provide fascinating evidence of the role animals played in life; later dogs featured extensively in portraits, indicating sitters' status as landowners. The countryside may be far from modern urban life but its inhabitants can offer a glimpse into that world. To Canvas “Animals live for the moment and hope for the best” (Jack Brown) “The painting technique itself explores the potential of paint to isolate and highlight the energy of the living world. I aim to reflect creatures' optimism of spirit through illustrating their muscular vitality. Following the local fell pack reveals the character and individuality of each hound. I try to capture that on canvas which involves close observation, rapid sketching, a bit of luck with the camera, a good memory and most of all a passion for the hounds.”.
