Ken Smith
Ken SmithKen's work has developed through his love of the intrinsic beauty to be found in wood. He works with the grain and movement to create each individually hand carved piece. Different coloured woods are used to create contrast. These range from the pale purity of holly through the golden tones of the native yew, and the deep richness of ebony and the density of African blackwood. When commencing a carving, Ken 'sees' through a piece of wood in order to use the grain and natural movement to best advantage in the hope that colour, grain and form will come together in perfect harmony . Background“I started carving in relief in Lakeland stone for one of the first galleries in the lake district at Keswick. I also produced copper and pewter relief work for a silversmith in Grasmere. I transferred my carving skills to wood about 25 years ago and started carving.” InspirationKen is inspired by the beauty of the pieces of wood and his love of nature. To carving“I have specialised in carving birds. Endeavouring to use the natural grain to enhance the shape of the bird. I used colour only when necessary for instance in carving a robin. Additionally I enjoy carving Burrs. These come mainly from Australia and Tasmania. I used the natural shape of the Burr and carve what I feel is sympathetic to the wood. All my work is finished using Rustins Danish Oil.”
