Kieran Crowder Kieran was born in Yorkshire. He graduated from the University of York in 1991 and later served in the armed forces. Kieran then pursued a part-time PhD in the School of Humanities at the Royal College of Art, London. After this long period of academic study and exhibiting on the alternative art circuit, he is now emerging as one of the most exciting and original painters at work in Britain. Inspiration Kieran's work is governed by an acute perception of the relation between art and its public. The primary focus is on the inner experience of those who engage with it. The power and beauty of his work is inspiring and his signature style so distinctive. Kieran explains, “People touch them, a gesture which for me is the point at which the real work of art begins. Reaching out despite feeling they shouldn't, the viewer confirms the painting as an especially privileged site of communication. The nature of this encounter is of immense pleasure to me. For this is the place that meaning is found, or rather made. Physical and emotional contact with the painting and individuals is the stimulus I hope my work provides. To Canvas The artwork is painted using artist's quality oil paints mixed with resin and accelerators, a secret recipe, so that just the right degree of viscosity is achieved. Kieran then paints this mixture onto canvases of pure linen, stretched over hand-built pine frames, in order to allow for large amounts of paint to be loaded onto the canvas, which enables the painting to appear almost 3-D. The raised painted surface is achieved using small brushes and the resulting light reflecting surfaces give a unique dimension to his work that tempts the viewer to want to touch the work as you would a sculpture.
