My early work concentrated on angular, linear figurative studies as I have always been fascinated by the essence and simplicity of a single, fluid line. With my most recent drawings and paintings I have been mainly focusing on the horse for inspiration and I have been trying to capture the dynamics and tension of the horses’ relationship with man. I am in the process of exploring linear drawings that will convey solid form, structure and movement through expressive energetic mark making; it’s all about trying to capture the spirit and soul of the beast.” To Canvas “I work mainly from images taken at horse events and agricultural shows and these form the basis of my work but they are used merely as a starting point and from there I use the knowledge and experience gained drawing, riding and working with horses to develop the work. I have recently been working with acrylic and inks producing monochrome images. The acrylic pieces explore the balance of light and shadow and the effect this has on the emotions whereas the ink drawings have a more spontaneous, expressive and instinctive line quality capturing the tension, power and gracefulness of this wonderful beast. I have also been working on limited edition etching prints with the emphasis again being on line, light and shade.” |
