Stephanie Dingle Background Stephanie was born in Lancaster, and grew up in the Furness District where she developed her appreciation of landscape. She trained as a nurse and midwife but much later, attended the Warrington School of Art and became a pupil of the critically acclaimed artist, Bill Turner of Manchester. At the same time she met Geoffery Key, another prominent Northern artist, who said: “I have been privileged to know Stephani and to see the development of her work. She is, in my estimation, an unsung hero of Northern painting. Her paintings glow with a youthful sense of life and excitement.” She has exhibited at the Royal Cambrian Academy and the Manchester Academy of Fine Art (1987 Prizewinner). Represented in the Rutherston Collection, Manchester City Art Gallery and the Halifax Building Society and in numerous private collections in the UK and overseas. “At the age of 85, Stephanie Dingle is the grande dame of Lancashire art” Lancashire Life Inspiration The inspiration for her flower paintings comes from her own garden. her frequent visits to France give inspiration for her seascapes and landscapes. Her work shows a naïve approach and a use of colour that owes much to the fauves. To canvas Stephanie added: “For me, art is a way of expressing how I feel. When I have any doubts about my work I remember a letter Bill Turner wrote to me in 1977, when he couldn't make one of my exhibitions. She reads from the handwritten note: “I think your painting is wonderful , and it is as well if I can quote Lowry's words to me some time back - “don't let them (the critics) put you off.” Just carry on doing what comes naturally.” And so she has.
