Steven Longbottom

Steve was always intrigued by cameras and taking pictures, way before he saw it as a calling. By the time he did, it took on a whole different meaning, and rather than wanting to use the camera to document, he started to create abstract and aesthetic based work. Initially his work was almost predominantly focused on the use of light, whether artificial or ambient and both as subject and style. Still present, he will now experiment with light in combination with a subject.

Background

After graduating in 2003, Steve has worked in many areas of photography, both commercial and art-based. Throughout all of his work he has consistently returned to a common theme of obscuring his subjects, whether literally with light or objects, or in a more subtle emotional way.

Inspiration

“Inspiration comes from everywhere, all of the time. I will pull together an idea of a subject and then skew it with an interpretation that comes from somewhere else. When visualised, these ideas show the things around me how I see them or how I wished I could see them.”

“I am also heavily influenced by film, often seeing my photographs as reminiscent of a still image taken from a created scene.”

‘Night Life’ - a beautiful collection of photographs taken in and around the city, showing plants, bushes and trees in the quiet of night, basking in the artificial glow of sodium light. The images are digitally printed in the letterbox format synonymous with film and are mounted without frames to keep the edges clean.
